What is Concert Pitch?

Concert pitch is the standard reference pitch used by musicians worldwide. The most common standard is A440, meaning the A above middle C vibrates at 440 Hz.

All tuning notes on this page are based on A440 concert pitch, ensuring your instrument will be in tune with other musicians and recordings.

How to Tune by Ear

  1. Play the reference tone for your string
  2. Pluck the corresponding string on your instrument
  3. Listen carefully to both tones
  4. Adjust your tuning peg until the pitches match
  5. When in tune, you'll hear no "beating" or wavering

Tuning Tips

  • • Tune up: Always tune from below the pitch, not above
  • • Stretch strings: New strings need time to settle
  • • Check twice: Re-tune after playing for a few minutes
  • • Quiet environment: Find a quiet space for accurate tuning
