BPM Counter

Tap along to any song to find its tempo. Use your mouse, finger, or spacebar - the counter averages your taps and shows a live BPM reading with the matching tempo marking.

Tap the backbeat

Locking onto the snare (beats 2 and 4) is usually easier than the kick. If your reading is half or double what you expect, you are tapping half- or double-time.

Let it settle

The first few taps are noisy. After 8-12 taps the rolling average is typically within 1 BPM of the true tempo. Pausing more than 3 seconds starts a fresh count.

BPM Counter FAQ

How does a BPM counter work?

You tap along with the beat of a song and the tool measures the time between your taps. BPM (beats per minute) is 60,000 divided by the average gap in milliseconds. Averaging over your most recent taps smooths out timing wobble, so the reading settles after about 8-12 taps.

How many taps do I need for an accurate BPM?

Four taps give a rough estimate; 8-12 taps usually settle within 1 BPM of the true tempo. Keep tapping through a full musical phrase for the most stable reading - the tool averages your most recent 12 intervals.

Why does my BPM reading jump around?

Early readings are based on only a couple of intervals, so a single early or late tap moves the number a lot. It stabilizes as more taps accumulate. If the song has a half-time feel you may also lock onto half or double the notated tempo - both are musically valid answers.

What BPM are most songs?

Most popular music sits between 80 and 140 BPM. Hip-hop commonly runs 80-100, house music 120-130, techno 125-140, drum and bass 160-180, and ballads 60-80. If your reading is around half or double what you expect, count the backbeat (snare) to decide which is right.

Can I use my keyboard to tap?

Yes - press the spacebar or any letter key in time with the music. On phones and tablets, tap the big pad with your finger. Mouse clicks work too.
