How It Works

When two sine waves of slightly different frequencies are played separately in each ear through headphones, your brain perceives a third "phantom" beat at the difference frequency.

For example: 200 Hz in left ear + 210 Hz in right ear = 10 Hz binaural beat (Alpha waves for relaxation).

What a binaural beat is

Play 200 Hz in the left ear and 210 Hz in the right and you hear a third thing: a slow 10 Hz pulsing that is not in either signal. It is created in the brainstem, where the two ears' signals are compared, which is why it only works on headphones. The pulse rate - the difference between the ears - is the beat frequency; the pitch you hear is the carrier. The idea behind "brainwave entrainment" is that a 10 Hz beat nudges brain activity toward the 10 Hz alpha rhythm associated with relaxed wakefulness.

How to use binaural beats

    Put on stereo headphones

    Binaural beats exist only inside your head: each ear must receive its own tone. Through speakers the two tones mix in the air and you get an ordinary (monaural) beat instead - audible, but not the same effect.

    Pick a carrier tone between 200 and 500 Hz

    The carrier is the pitch you actually hear. The effect is strongest with carriers under about 1,000 Hz; 200 – 440 Hz is comfortable for long sessions.

    Set the beat frequency

    The beat is the difference between the two ears. For 10 Hz alpha: 200 Hz left, 210 Hz right. Choose the band from the table above, or use a preset.

    Keep the volume low and stay 15 – 30 minutes

    The beat is perceived, not heard as loudness - turning it up does nothing useful. Studies that report effects typically use sessions of 15 – 30 minutes; give it at least 10 before judging.

What the research actually shows

The beat is real. Heinrich Wilhelm Dove described it in 1839 and Gerald Oster's 1973 Scientific American paper established the modern account. EEG studies reliably detect a response at the beat frequency - the brain is following the rhythm.

The benefits are small and inconsistent. A 2019 meta-analysis pooling 22 studies found modest average effects on anxiety, memory and attention, with the largest effects from longer exposure. A 2023 systematic review of EEG studies concluded the entrainment evidence itself is inconsistent: some studies find the expected band changes, others find none or the opposite.

What that means for you. Binaural beats are a low-cost, low-risk relaxation cue that some people respond to and some do not. If a week of honest trials does nothing, the better-evidenced alternatives are brown noise or pink noise for sleep and masking, and plain structured breaks for focus.

Do binaural beats actually work?

Partly, and less than the marketing suggests. EEG studies confirm the brain responds to the beat frequency (the "frequency-following response"), and a 2019 meta-analysis of 22 studies found small but real average effects on anxiety, memory and attention. Later systematic reviews call the evidence inconsistent: effects vary widely between studies and people, and some well-run trials find nothing. Treat them as a relaxation aid that helps some people, not a switch that sets your brain to a frequency.

Why do binaural beats need headphones?

Because the beat is created in the brainstem by comparing the signals from each ear. If both tones reach both ears - as they do from speakers - the comparison never happens; you hear the two tones interfering in the air instead. Any stereo headphones or earbuds work; they do not need to be expensive.

What frequency should I use for sleep, focus or meditation?

By convention: delta (1 – 4 Hz) for sleep, theta (4 – 8 Hz) for meditation, alpha (8 – 14 Hz) for relaxation, beta (14 – 30 Hz) for focus, and 40 Hz gamma for attention. Head-to-head evidence between settings is thin, so pick the conventional band, keep it for a week, and judge by how you feel rather than by the label.

How long should I listen?

Most studies use 15 – 30 minute sessions. There is no evidence that listening all night outperforms a session at bedtime, and headphones in bed bother most sleepers. For staying asleep, brown or pink noise from a speaker is the better-evidenced option.

Are binaural beats safe?

For most people, yes - they are quiet sine tones. People with epilepsy or a seizure disorder should avoid rhythmic audio stimulation unless a doctor says otherwise, and nobody should use them while driving or operating machinery. If you get a headache, lower the volume or stop.

Binaural beats vs isochronic tones - what is the difference?

Binaural beats are two steady tones, one per ear, whose difference creates a perceived beat; they require headphones. Isochronic tones are a single tone switched on and off at the target rate; they work through speakers and produce a stronger, more obvious pulse. Evidence for one over the other is not established.
