Mosquito Tone

Can you hear the mosquito tone? Test your hearing with ultra-high frequencies (15-20kHz) that typically only young people can hear. Challenge your friends and find out your hearing age!

⚠️ Warning: Start at LOW volume! High frequencies can be uncomfortable. Not recommended for those with tinnitus or hearing sensitivity.

What is the Mosquito Tone?

The "mosquito tone" is a high-frequency sound (typically 17kHz) that most adults cannot hear due to age-related hearing loss called presbycusis.

As we age, we gradually lose the ability to hear high frequencies. This phenomenon has been used in "teen deterrent" devices and as a way for young people to communicate without adults hearing.

Age-Based Hearing

  • Under 20: Can typically hear up to 20kHz
  • 20-30: Usually hear up to 17-18kHz
  • 30-40: Typically hear up to 16kHz
  • 40-50: Usually hear up to 14-15kHz
  • 50+: Often limited to 12-14kHz

Why Can't Adults Hear It?

Presbycusis is the gradual loss of hearing that occurs as we age. The hair cells in our inner ear that detect high frequencies are damaged over time by:

  • • Natural aging process
  • • Noise exposure (concerts, headphones)
  • • Environmental factors
  • • Genetics

Famous Uses

  • Teen Deterrent: Devices to discourage loitering
  • Secret Ringtones: Students use in class
  • Age Challenge: Viral social media tests
  • Hearing Research: Studying age-related loss

Testing Tips

  • Start low: Begin at 30% volume
  • Use headphones: Better high-frequency response
  • Quiet room: Minimize background noise
  • Be honest: Don't pretend to hear it!
  • Challenge friends: Compare results

Important Notes

  • Not medical: For entertainment only
  • Equipment matters: Speaker quality affects results
  • Individual variation: Age is just a guideline
  • Protect hearing: Avoid loud volumes
