Where fades earn their keep

Killing clicks: any clip cut from a longer file starts and ends mid-waveform, and that discontinuity is an audible click - 0.1-0.5 s of fade removes it, which is why the ringtone maker ships with fades on by default. Song endings: the classic radio fade-out is 5-10 seconds of equal-power curve starting past the last chorus - cut the tail first in the MP3 cutter, then fade here. Podcast beds: 3-5 seconds out under the closing words; check the final loudness against your platform target with the audio analyzer or level it with the volume normalizer.

How do I add a fade to an audio file?

What is the difference between linear and equal-power fades?

A linear fade drops the amplitude in a straight line, which the ear - hearing loudness logarithmically - perceives as hanging on and then dying too fast. An equal-power curve follows a sine shape that sounds like a smooth, constant-rate fade. Rule of thumb: equal-power for musical fades (the default here), linear for very short technical fades where you just need clicks gone.

How long should a fade-out be?

Song ending: 5-10 seconds, starting after the final chorus peaks. Podcast outro music: 3-5 seconds under the closing words. Removing a click at a cut point: 0.1-0.5 seconds - barely a fade, just enough to ramp the edge. Ringtones and loops: 0.3-0.5 seconds on both ends.

Why does my exported clip click at the start or end?

A file that starts or ends mid-waveform jumps instantly from silence to signal - the jump itself is a click. Even 0.1 seconds of fade-in and fade-out removes it. This is the single most common fix for clips cut from a longer file.

Is my file uploaded?
