What is 432 Hz?

432 Hz is an alternative tuning reference for the note A4 - eight hertz below the modern standard of 440 Hz. In a 432-tuned orchestra, every note shifts down by about 32 cents (roughly a third of a semitone), so music sounds very slightly lower and, to some listeners, warmer or more relaxed.

The idea has real historical roots: before international standardization in 1939, concert pitch varied wildly by city and era, from around 415 Hz in baroque Europe to 450+ Hz in some 19th-century opera houses. Giuseppe Verdi campaigned for a legally fixed pitch of 432 Hz in Italy in 1884 - which is why 432 Hz tuning is sometimes called "Verdi tuning".

What does science actually say?

Claims that 432 Hz is mathematically aligned with the universe, water crystals, or DNA are not supported by physics - the hertz itself is an arbitrary human unit tied to the definition of the second. However, a handful of small studies have compared 432 Hz and 440 Hz music and reported modest effects: a 2019 study on dental patients found slightly lower salivary cortisol with 432 Hz music, and a small 2016 study measured a small drop in heart rate. These studies are small and not conclusive, but the honest summary is: some people genuinely find lower-pitched music more relaxing, and a 32-cent drop makes music measurably lower.

Neither is objectively better - they are reference points, and instruments sound equally in tune with themselves at either pitch. 432 Hz makes everything about a third of a semitone lower, which some listeners perceive as warmer or calmer. Blind listening tests show most people can hear a difference in direct comparison but do not reliably prefer one without knowing which is which.

Did ancient civilizations tune to 432 Hz?

No reliable evidence supports this. The hertz was only defined in the 19th century, and surviving ancient and medieval instruments show a wide range of pitches. The documented history is more modest: pitch varied by region for centuries, Verdi advocated 432 Hz in the 1880s, and 440 Hz won international standardization in 1939.

How do I convert my music to 432 Hz?

Pitch-shift the audio down by 31.77 cents (a ratio of 432/440). Most DAWs and many music players can do this - in Audacity, use Effect > Change Pitch and enter -0.32 semitones. Note that re-pitching a finished 440 Hz recording is not the same as performing on instruments tuned to 432 Hz, though the audible result is very similar.
